History of 'Aloo Prantha'

11/03/2021
'Aloo Paratha' is a delightful Indian entire wheat flatbread loaded down with a hot potato filling, cooked on a hot pan or tawa, spread with butter or ghee and presented with pickle and hand crafted yoghurt. It is a comfort food at its best.

I love that every food in World has its own history and so is 'Aloo Prantha'. According to various sources, stuffed Pranthas orignated from early 12th century and in starting these were stuffed by sweet ingredients such as jaggery and gram paste.

So how it came to someone's mind to stuff 'Prathas' with potato/ aloo. It is very hard to find out the exact time period but there are two theories about how it is called 'Pratha' - first one is that it is combination of 'Parat and Ata' ( layer and flour) and second theory states that Prantha's dough is kneeded in 'Paraat' (a big plate used for dough kneeding) and they changed it from 'Praat' to 'Prantha'.

Anyway, potatos are not native to India and before potatos 'purple yam' was used in Indian dishes. But the day potatos came to India, that was the starting of origins of a huge number of Indian dishes which contains 'Aloo/ potato'.
